Here’s Moncler‘s FW17/18 collection that proposes a revival of its iconic models made from the materials that characterize the brand’s DNA. A reinterpretation of some its archive items from the ’80s depicts chromatic restyling and details oriented towards genderless tailoring.
The Moncler parka, which is luxed up regularly by everyone from Thom Browne for Moncler Gamme Bleu to Lucas Ossendrijver at Lanvin, started out as an invention of the indigenous Arctic population before being appropriated by polar explorers from the late 19th century onwards. It then segued into sportswear and military apparel. Today, it’s a standard at Uniqlo.
The branch focuses on duvet and oversized pieces in high density, ultra-light down proof nylon, accentuated by criss-crossing diamond quilting. In addition, macro-tag bands, a consistent element within Green’s designs, are incorporated into the collection, which allows the tightening and shaping of the volume and silhouette of certain key pieces.
Consider it the most functional thing in your wardrobe — a soft and comforting kind of armour. But the down-filled coat is much more than that. In the hands of a design visionary, the down coat, or puffa, becomes an opportunity for something wild and sculptural.
The signature piece of the French-Italian brand with its quilted cheap moncler jackets are dressed in nylon laqué, a perfectly waterproof but breathable material, while the down jacket is punctuated by plays on oversize volumes and bright colors like sky-blue, cherry-red and emerald-green, with contrasting tones. Another key collection at DSM this season is the collaboration between Craig Green and Moncler outlet. It looks a little like Issey Miyake at his most innovative, but it’s grounded in performance. “I’ve always been fascinated by ideas of protection,” explains Green, “for this collection we took inspiration from mountain-rescue equipment — I like the way that the straps squashed the form, mimicking the same type of structure and effect of a Moncler classic quilted down jacket.” The result, a two-piece men’s puffa suit, looks like next-level, intergalactic ski gear. It looks like the future. Which is one of the things that makes this, like a lot of new-wave down-filled pieces, truly great fashion.
